Kilkenny’s solid performance leaves us with plenty of hope for the year ahead

image preview

It’s amazing how a Kilkenny supporter’s mind works. Making my way back to the car last Saturday evening after the Cats had dished out another hammering to Wexford I asked a few fans for their thoughts, thinking that an 11-point victory would have left them content, how wrong I was.

The Cats returned to winning ways in the Allianz Hurling League, defeating Waterford in this fifth round Allianz Hurling League game in Nowlan Park on Sunday last. Kilkenny started well and enjoyed the better posession in the first half and deservedly lead at the interval by 0-10 to 0-6. A Shane Walsh goal in the 51st minute followed immediately by an Eoin Mc Grath point saw the Déise edge ahead by two points but Kilkenny showed good character and responded well and thanks to goals from TJ Reid and Colin Fennelly they remain on course to figure in the closing stages of this year’s League.

Clarinbridge hurlers should be at full strength

A club’s season can turn on a small thing. Clarinbridge were close to crashing out of the Galway county championship in the group stages last summer. It took a late free from Mark Kerins to snatch a draw off Beagh in their last group game, and without that score, they would not have even qualified, having lost their first two games to Kinvara and Portumna.

Into the side come Shane Morley after a recent hamstring problem, Kenny Robinson who scored a goal after coming on against Kerry gets the nod at number 15. Sean Markham will make his debut in the half back line while Brian Moran who fired over four points after he came on against Kerry will come into the half forward line. Keith Higgins who will also be on duty with the Mayo football team on Sunday drops to the bench for Saturday’s game.

McIntyre urges hurling fans to get behind Galway on Sunday

The Galway hurlers will take on Waterford at 2.30pm this Sunday at Pearse Stadium. It is the first time these two teams have met since the Déise sensationally snatched victory when a Galway win looked in the bag last summer in the All-Ireland quarter final.

Hurlers back for another cut at glory

While the footballers have been doing the business on the field picking up two wins from their opening games in the national league, it is now the hurlers’ time to go into competitive action this weekend. Martin Brennan and Pete Finnerty are back on board for this year following initial murmuring that they were not going to take charge of the side again following their exit from the Christy Ring Cup at the semi final stage last term.
